Recommended Poker Books

Here are a couple more of my favorite poker books...

Doyle Brunson's Super System

If you're more interested in no-limit Hold'em than fixed limit games this is a great book by the two time World series of Poker Champion Doyle Brunson. Includes chapters on various other games by Doyle's professional poker playing buddies. Written "back in the day" some of the material could use an update, but it's a great look into what made Brunson the champ he is. His writing style reflects his good ol' boy lifestyle- plain english. He uses it to tell you how to play hands. No fooling around. Kind of like his poker style which can be summed up by the word ATTACK. This book cost a small fortune back when Doyle was running the publishing himself, but wisely he turned it over to a real publisher and it's suddenly available for a much nicer price.

Phil Hellmuth Jr.'s Play Poker Like the Pros

If Doyle's style isn't your thing you'll love this one by the current "bad boy of poker." Phil explains the basics of all the currently popular games and delves into beginning and advanced strategy, including an interesting animal system for classifying players from the weak "mouse" to the crazy "jackal." He gives solid advice about how to adjust your strategy to each type of player. He includes chapters dedicated to online play and of course no-limit tournaments. If you're wondering if Phil's unstoppable ego is evident in his writing style, well, yes it is. You will not get far without finding out exactly how many WSOP bracelets he has. I'm truly surprised he doesn't wear them all at once every day. A great book for beginning to medium level players.
